What is depression?

Depression is a mental disorder or a mental illness that affects one’s state of mind. Its a mental health disorder characterized by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life. Possible causes include a combination of biological, psychological, and social sources of distress. Increasingly, research suggests that these factors may cause changes in brain function, including the altered activity of certain neural circuits in the brain. The persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest that characterizes major depression can lead to a range of behavioral and physical symptoms. These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide.

Some of the common cause of depression is a failure in marriage or relationship, missed opportunity, failure in business, death of loved ones, and some other life events. in some cases, genetic factors are important in many cases of depression. Depression seems to run in families (as do other mood disorders), and about 30% of the predisposition for depression is due to genetic influences.

Symptoms of depression: the symptoms of depression are classified into Psychological and Physical symptoms

Psychological symptoms are as follows:

  1.  lost of interest in activities
  2. poor thinking and lack of concentration
  3. felling miserable
  4. feeling guilty with lots of unpleasant thoughts
  5. having suicidal thoughts.

Physical symptoms are as follows:

  1. slowed speech and activity
  2. loss of interest in  sex
  3. energy loss without ant physical activity
  4. difficulty in sleeping despite been tired
  5. loss of weight and appetite.

How to deal with depression.

There is a large range of ways in dealing with depression and there isn’t any special way of handling it, some of the best ways to handle it are by visiting a therapist or a counselor, taking a long walk, getting engaged in activities that will ease the mind.
